HEALTHY COMMUNITIES/HEALTHY EATING
Last year, the Grant County Health District embarked on a healthy communities program focused on Ephrata. Studies have shown that when all factors are considered, Grant County ranks rather poorly among other counties in the state regarding health issues. I chose to participate on behalf of the Chamber. Since the first meeting, workgroups have been established to focus on different aspects of community and personal health with my path directed on Healthy Eating. Our plans for 2012 involve establishing a community garden followed by a school garden located at the Middle School. We have secured a location for the community garden on C St SW, obtained lumber for the construction of raised beds, and are working on a host of other details in order to be ready by spring. The City has agreed to supply water and Jim Baird of Cloudview Ecofarms has agreed to donate wood chips for garden paths. If you are interested in volunteering, donating tools or supplies, or have any expertise or great ideas, I would love to hear from you. I can be contacted at kid753@gmail.com.

MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET

A huge thank you to all those who participated in the Miracle on Main Street Festival. Thanks to some great weather we had almost 100 people turn out for the Jingle Bell Fun Run. Top overall male runner was Gavin Barnes, top overall female runner was Katelyn McDonnell. If you have not received your t-shirt, please contact the office at info@ephratawachamber.com to make arrangements to pick it up.

The children were kept busy at the ERC with crafts and activities. Lunch was served by the St. Rose ASB. The Hospital Ladies Auxiliary were on location with the most delicious Christmas cookies. THANK YOU! If you happened to stop by, the local MOPS group was also represented. They were selling cookbooks and crafts as well as serving hot cocoa.

Meanwhile, the Blue Flame restaurant was home to some of Ephrata’s finest entertainers. Many people stopped by to enjoy the fine holiday music. THANK YOU to Columbia Ridge singers, Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint Women’s Group, the Chimes Group, and Bells Group for sharing your talents. Not to be outdone, Santa made a stop at the historical Nat Washington House for photos. The location was beautiful, albeit cold, so all faces had rosy cheeks. Thank you Santa for stopping by.

The evening progressed with the lighted Christmas Parade. All entries were appreciated and enjoyed. First place entry went to the local Girls Scouts, second Best Western Rama Inn, and third went to Circle G Farms. After the parade, those who stuck around enjoyed the park lighting. What a wonderful, fun-filled day!

Thank you once again to the following organizations: Pizza Hut, Subway, Lonestar, LLC, City of Ephrata, Washington Trust Bank, Granco Federal Credit Union, US Bank, EHS Dance Team, EHS Cheerleaders, MECHA Club, EMS, ACE Hardware, RBG Music, Nat Washington House, and Columbia Basin Family Medicine, and the numerous volunteers who helped make this event successful.
